If you have an old PC that you no longer need or want then it is important to dispose of it in an environmentally conscious way. This is because electronic equipment contains products that can be harmful to the environment if they are placed in landfill.

And the problem of ever growing landfill sites is a real problem; with many western countries shipping their dangerous old computers and other electronics to places like China where they go into huge landfill sites that are contaminating the surrounding land so that crops can no longer be grown there and the water supplies also become contaminated.

Electronic and electrical waste, hospital known as e-waste, order is a problem that is getting steadily worse as so many consumers like to regularlgy upgrade to the latest PC, ask laptop ,tablet or smartphone. But by simply disposing of your old computer and other e-waste using an eco-friendly approach, you can go a long way to preventing this issue from getting worse.

Here are some of the environmentally-aware ways in which you can dispose of your old computers.

  • Return it to the manufacturer – Most manufacturers now have a scheme in place where you can return electronic products once they have reached the end-of-life, particularly in the UK, Europe, US and Canada where the waste electrical and electronic equipment regulations (WEEE Regulations) are now in place. But do check exactly what the manufacturer is going to do with the computer to be absolutely sure they are compliant.

  • Use a specialist electronic waste recycling company – This is more relevant for corporations rather than individuals where a specialist e-waste recycler will take on responsibility for the effective and compliant handling of the e-waste where there are large quantities to be disposed of. Such companies are also able to handle and confidential data destruction to ensure old hard drives are properly wiped of sensitive information and personal details.

  • Sell your PC or laptop – If your computer still works, even if not very quickly you could try selling it at an online auction. Many computer enthusiasts buy old computers for spares or to teach students about how a computer is constructed.

  • Donate to charity – Help those less fortunate than yourself by donating your old machine to a charity that helps in poorer parts of the world.
