A further example of how the methods of accessing the internet have changed can be seen in the announcement by Google, as reported by the BBC, that they have changed their ranking algorithm to favour sites which are mobile friendly.

This major shift in emphasis will see many more organisations now making sure that their websites are mobile friendly. This will, of course, require a conversion to a different web format for the mobile sites to work properly.

When looking at the main differences between fixed-line internet access and its mobile counterpart, the first thing which springs to mind is the screen size. Websites accessed on smartphones and tablets require a different resolution in order to be displayed properly, due to the smaller screen size. Images can appear stretched on a site that has not been optimised for mobile access, while long stretches of text, such as account numbers or urls, can disappear off the side of the screen.

At one time, the actual internet browsers featured on mobile devices could also occasionally prove to be problematic, offering a connection that was infuriatingly slow. However, as smart technology has continued to advance, this now rarely proves to be much of a concern as many devices now boast browsers with full capabilities.
